Ness, the boy from Onnet bound to save the Earth from Earthbound.

Yuu, the daughter of the cruel king from the Cruel King and the Great Hero.

These two pacifistic children were able to save the world with the help of their friends, a wacky arsenal, and a weapon to bonk their enemies on the head with. Before we begin, here are the sources we used for this blog!

Background

Ness

In the small town of Onnet, there was a boy named Ness, who was just an average boy. He has a pet dog named King, a little sister named Tracy, and a best friend named Porky. He was living a relatively normal life… until a meteor crashed at the top of a mountain near his location. Naturally, he, Porky, and King went to investigate, and the “meteor” housed a bee warrior named Buzz Buzz, who warned Ness of an incoming prophecy that an alien from the future, the Universal Cosmic Destroyer named Giygas was coming to conquer the world, and when Porky’s mom killed him (she thought he was a fly), in his dying words, he told Ness that he and three other kids would have to travel the world, collect the Eight Melodies and stop Giygas. Ok, maybe Ness wasn’t so average after all lol. Obviously, Ness wasn’t ready for his life to go from 0 to 100 within a few minutes, but knowing that everyone was counting on him, he set out on his adventure to save the world.

As his adventures continued, not only did he get stronger, but he gained new allies in a telepathic girl named Paula, a geek with rocket launchers named Jeff, and a prince named Poo. Oh, and also Porky became evil, but let’s not talk about it. Eventually, they were able to collect the Eight Melodies, and Ness travelled to a world in his mind named Magicant. There, he revisited old memories and fought the darkness in his heart, and after defeating it, he gained a massive power boost and absorbed Magicant into himself. Soon, it was time for them to face Giygas, but there was a catch. To do so, they’d have to place their souls into robot bodies, as their human bodies wouldn’t be able to handle the effects of traveling to the past. However, while battling Giygas, they weren’t able to do anything to him, despite all the power they had, and in the end, they had to pray to everyone, the friends and families they had, the friends they made throughout the journey, and YOU (yes, YOU, the player) to defeat Giygas once and for all. Afterwards, Ness helped return his friends to their homes and afterwards, and went back home to tell his mom about all his adventures. In the end, even with Ness’ frankly impossible quest, the friends he’s made along the way were able to help him achieve the impossible, showing that as long as a bunch of people are working together to achieve the same goal, there’s nothing you can’t do.

Yuu

In the Monster Kingdom, led by a benevolent ruler named Dragon King, there was something strange: a human girl living amongst the monsters. This girl was Yuu, and her goal was to become a great hero like her biological father before her. She lost her parents when she was a baby, and Dragon King looked after her while wanting her to achieve her goal. Yuu went out to help whoever she can help, and by doing so, she was able to make plenty of friends and make new allies, such as a fox cub named Rocky, who she helped by curing his sick family, a bat monster named Cybat, who went with her to investigate the Hunnee Tribe problem (he was responsible for it and wanted to kill her due to missing the power of a certain someone we’ll get into later, but she forgave him, so it’s ok) and a human princess named Flora, who she saved from succumbing in her Fountain Trial that she ventured to make a wish. As for what Flora went to risk her life for, it’s due to rumors of a dangerous monster from the past.

Long ago, the Demon King (who was the certain someone we mentioned earlier) had nearly destroyed humanity until a certain hero defeated him. Now, there are rumors that the same Demon King was starting to regain his power, so Flora went out to make her wish for the sake of her kingdom.

Naturally, Yuu decided to help Flora defeat the Demon King, only for the shoe to finally drop when they arrived at Demon King Mountain. Demon King… is DRAGON KING (dun dun dun…). The hero who had defeated the Demon King all those years ago was none other than Yuu’s father, who spared and healed him, with them eventually becoming buddies. However, one day, a monster attacked Yuu’s parents when they were with their child, and while the mother instantly died, the father was able to get to Dragon King and ask him to take care of his daughter before succumbing to his wounds, which led to the events happening in the present.

After defeating her father, he requested her to kill him, and she was about to… until a spider monster named Arthur (who was the monster that KILLED Yuu’s parents) stepped in and reattached the severed horn that Yuu’s father had sliced off those years ago. His plan? The return of the Demon King. After fatally wounding Yuu, Flora took her to the Fountain Trial, with Yuu having to face the darkness of her heart to return and save her father (after getting a pep talk from Flora, as Yuu was understandably and justifiably shaken from what happened). After conquering the trial, she returned to Demon King Mountain, defeated Arthur, and after a long battle, she followed in her father’s footsteps by defeating the Demon King and severing his horn like her father did all those years ago. After a heart-to-heart, Dragon King realized his mistake of wanting Yuu to kill him, and they soon flew back home, slowly bridging the gap between humans and monsters. Being a hero is hard, but a big lesson Yuu, and frankly, all of us learned is that being a hero isn’t about your strength or the monsters you’ve slain, but the people you saved.

Experience and Intelligence

Ness

In terms of intelligence, Ness was an average boy, so he naturally had a general education, and depending on your interpretation of Earthbound’s flowery language, Ness gained an intelligence boost after absorbing Magicant. In terms of skill/experience, while Ness didn’t have any at the start of his journey, he was very skilled and adept when it came to learning and mastering his PSI powers. He has faced a large variety of opponents, including robots, people, ghosts, mummies, dinosaurs, etc, etc, etc. With training, he essentially gained Ultra Instinct (yes, the whole “fighting/moving without thinking” thing) in the manga, and impressed Poo despite not having much training.

Yuu

Yuu, since discovering her father was a great hero, spent many years and seasons training in basic sword combat. Seemingly to match how her deceased father used to use his sword. Slamming it into foes like a hammer. She would also train tirelessly every day just so she could become a GREAT HERO! While not really learning how to read or write, she seemingly is studying with the Human Kingdom’s Princess, named Flora, to learn how to read and write. (And she actually has! YIPPIE!!!!)

Despite her small age, she has accomplished many things. Such as finding the sacred Blooming Forest to find a cure for a fox family’s illness, doing detective work to stop an impending war between bears and bees, visiting the Fountain World, which is a world outside of their own, exploring around the world she is in, including scaling Demon King Mountain! She is also fairly skilled in combat, as she knows how to use certain items and how to defeat certain enemies. She even has conquered the Dark Fountain Trial, in which almost all people who have done it died, and defeated the mighty Demon King. Pretty impressive for a little girl.

Equipment

Ness

Ness has carried an assortment of items, weapons, and accessories throughout his journey to save the world! There are a lot, so let's cover them all!

Items

  • Pencil Eraser: An invention from Apple Kid that erases pencils. That’s it lol.
  • Eraser Eraser: Essentially a Pencil Eraser that works on erasers. In the novel, it is instead multiple devices are capable of destroying anything at the molecular level, regardless of material.
  • Food: Items that can be used to either heal Ness or restore his PP. Important ones to mention are the Skip Sandwich that can increase his speed for a few seconds, and the Cup of Lifenoodles that can heal Ness from most status effects in the game, such as...
    • Poison: This effect deals damage over time, even outside of battle!
    • Nausea: This actually does the same thing as poison, dealing damage over time.
    • Falling Asleep: As the name suggests, the target falls asleep and can't use any moves.
    • Uncontrollable Crying: The target starts crying uncontrollably, and will lower accuracy, causing them to miss attacks.
    • Cold: Similar to poison and nausea, it causes a small amount of damage over time. Less than the previous two, however.
    • Sunstroke: This condition is caused by prolonged exposure to the hot sun and results in a small amount of damage over time.
  • Remedies: Items that can be used to cure Ness of the status effects mentioned above.
  • Capsules: Items that can be used to increase all of Ness’ stats, with Guts being a stat that can help Ness get a SMASH attack (more on that later).
  • Battle Items: Items that can be used for combat, such as Teddy Bears to block attacks (until they break), bombs to blow opponents up, a bag of Dragonite to turn into a dragon, multiple items that have animals attack you, either stunning you or poisioning you, a handbag strap/mummy wrap to whip the opponent with, dirty socks to stun the opponent, a Rust Promotor to use on metallic opponents or items, or a toothbrush to stun the opponent with your dazzling smile.
  • Franklin Badge: Can be used to reflect lightning-based attacks. Granted to him by Paula.

Weapons

  • Baseball Bat: Ness’ primary (and most iconic) weapon of choice. While there have been many bats found throughout the game, the most powerful bat is the Legendary Bat, although the Casey Bat is also important to mention, as it has more power than the Legendary Bat at the cost of lowering accuracy.
  • Yo-Yo: Ness’ second weapon of choice, which naturally has more range than a baseball bat.
  • Slingshot: Ness’ final weapon, and the one with the most range (that doesn’t require PSI).

Armors

  • Hats: Increases defense (and also makes him look stylish). An important one to mention is the Mr. Saturn Hat (from the Earthbound manga), which can block attacks and fire energy at an opponent.
  • Charms: Can be used for a variety of things, depending on the charm used, such as protecting him from paralysis, increasing his defense, and increasing his speed (Rabbit’s Foot in particular gives Ness +40 speed)

  • Pendants: Can be used to protect Ness from a variety of PSI attacks, such as Fire, Freeze, and Paralysis.

  • Bracelets/Bands: Can be used to amp stats, but the best one is the Goddess Band, granting him +80 defense, +30 luck, and preventing him from being put to sleep.

  • Coins: Increases Ness’ defense and also makes him lucky.

Yuu

Yuu has collected many items, weapons, and armor throughout her quest! There are a lot, so let's not waste any time and dive right in!

Items

  • Magic Crumbs: These are magical crumbs that Yuu carries around. If she sprinkles them on herself, she gets instantly teleported to the Monster Village. And it has an infinite use.
  • Hollow Bumpy Stone: This item protects Yuu from immense frigid temperatures, keeping her warm and toasty.
  • Mysterious Twig: When Yuu is within the Fountain World, this stick, when touched on the ground, makes clouds within the world disappear.
  • Fruit/Hunee: Yuu carries some fruit on her, which can heal her, with one being able to refill her energy over time.
  • Status Effect Items: She also carries a bunch of items that can inflict status effects. Some like…
    • Burn: This causes the target to get…well, burned. Dealing damage over time.
    • Chill: This causes a target to be unable to move due to the sheer cold.
    • Poison: Just like burned, it deals damage over time, but instead, it's poison.
    • Sticky: This causes the target to take more damage and move more slowly.
    • Seal: This nullifies powers and special abilities for a whole fight.
    • Sleepy: As the name suggests, it causes targets to fall asleep for a few turns.
      • Some other items can increase attack and speed, lower attack and speed, and one of the more important items is the Glass Statue, which converts all damage into 1 damage. Although she can only carry one at a time, and it has a short time limit. However, she can extend this time limit by combining an armor to make it last 3x longer.
  • Status Effect Remover Items: As the name suggests, these items can specifically remove certain status effects. Although she has an item called Panacea, which removes ALL status effects at once.
  • Potions: She carries potions called Angel’s Cures and Angel’s Elixers. They heal HP WAY MORE than any healing item.
  • Revival Items: Again, as the name suggests, she carries around items that can revive and restore health. One can heal half HP, one can buff allies, and one can restore ALL HP.
  • Miscellaneous Items: Yuu also carries around other items, such as one that can repel monsters and one that can summon stars to rain on opponents. She could also craft items such as Rewind Powder, which can reverse time on a broken object to fix it, and the Oblivion Remedy, which, once it is consumed, will erase memories stretching back into childhood. And finally, she carries around storybooks, which can take her to other worlds/universes. She even met the Liar Princess and the Blind Prince!

Weapons

  • Stick: Yuu’s first weapon. A classic. Who wouldn’t want to pick up a stick in the woods and use it as a badass sword??? Unfortunately, it broke, forcing her to ditch it and get an ACTUAL SWORD.
  • Swords: Yuu has a variety of swords. She has one called the Mirage Sword, which is light as air, and one called the Miasma Sword that lowers attack, but can deal 10x damage to dazed enemies. But her best weapons are the Spirit Sword and Yuu’s Sword. After conquering her trial, Yuu gained the power of the fountain within her father’s sword, massively buffing her attacks and allowing her to use fire magic. Yuu’s Sword was obtained after conquering the Nightmare World again. This time, it buffed ALL STATS.

Armors

  • Pots: Ah, the most notable armor she has. Pots! They mainly increase defense, with the strongest being the Home Pot. Which may or may not belong to the Fountain Spirit. (Also DO NOT headbutt Yuu lol)
  • Robes: She has two of these, one being the Light Robe and one being the Crystal Robe. The former lowers defense while increasing speed and evasion, while the latter increases defense IMMENSELY, but lowers attack and speed.
  • Rings: She has a variety of rings. Some can increase stats, one can restore health passively, and one can restore energy passively.
  • Gauntlets: Some of these do different things. Such as increasing damage against boss monsters, restoring more energy, increasing attack, making attacks heal, and doubling effects on items.
  • Amulets: These specifically can protect against status effects. There are a variety of these, but the most notable, called the Omni-Man Amulet, can prevent ANY negative status effect.
  • Glasses: She has two glasses, one of which increases accuracy, but the more notable one, called the Tiger Glasses, can increase chances of critical hits…but lowers accuracy.
  • Bracelets: These do different things. Such as increasing agility, restoring energy, lowering energy consumption, and the most notable being the Grit Bracelet, which increases stats if under negative status effects.
  • Charms: There are two of these. One can halve damage if Yuu becomes sticky, but the other can revive Yuu if she dies. But she can only hold up to 10 of these.
  • Shoes: YOOOOO YUU GOT DRIP??? But seriously, she has two of these. One makes her sticky at all times, and the other increases defense.
  • Overcoats: She has three of these. One increases evasion and agility, one chills targets if they attack her, and one does the opposite and burns targets if they attack her.
  • Orbs: Again, she has three of these. One can recover HP, one can make her attacks do fire damage, and one can do the opposite and do ice damage.
  • Needles: She has two of these, where one increases damage against dazed enemies, while the other increases damage against burned enemies.
  • Miscellaneous Equips: She has other items, which do various things. One attacks ALL enemies at once, reduce damage while guarding, doubles damage while guarding, makes her gain more shells (basically monster currency), increase attack at the expense of losing special skills, doubling energy, increase EXP gain, increase damage against flying enemies, and the most notable being the Recovery Jewel which increases her HP while making her gain more.

The Fountain Spirit
While not technically an item, the Fountain Spirit is within Yuu’s sword, which allows her to use fire magic. But basically, the Fountain Spirit is a wish-granting being from the Fountain World (Who may or may not be Yuu’s mom). Due to being chill with the spirit, Yuu can utilize fountains scattered across her world that can transport her to different places or the Fountain World itself, and can heal her HP and stamina instantly. Within the Fountain World, the spirit can start Fountain Trials, which create a pocket dimension of the person’s darkness within their heart, which can trap them inside with no way out. Including teleportation. If they stay in there for too long, they get spirited away and die. Along with this, in the Fountain World, Yuu sorta has immortality, due to healing at an accelerated rate, and her physical body is frozen in time until she leaves the world.

Powers and Abilities

Ness

PSI

Throughout his adventures, Ness had awakened to a strange ability named PSI (which stands for “psychic powers”), which gives Ness access to multiple abilities. While Ness has multiple vartations of the same moves (with É‘ being the weakest version of his moves and ê¥ being the strongest version of his moves), with the stronger PSI attacks costing more PP (which stands for “psychic points”) for the sake of simplicity, we will just be mentioning the moves themselves and what they do.
  • PK Rockin: Ness’ main attack in terms of offense, with it being a barrage of primary colors on either a single target or multiple (depends on version used). This attack is VERY POWERFUL, and kicks ass ngtl.
  • PK Flash: This is a move that releases a large flash that does varying things like:
    • Paralyze: Basically, making it so targets CAN'T MOVE.
    • Uncontrollable Crying: This lowers accuracy.
    • Feeling Strange: This status effect prevents the target from controlling who they hit. It includes hitting themself or their own teammates.
    • Insta Kill: There is a small chance that with PK Flash, it can instantly kill the opponent.
      • Although it is worth mentioning that Ness cannot control which effect PK Flash uses. It's completely random.
  • Lifeup: A move that can heal Ness and his allies, with the amount of health healed depending on the version used. The strongest version can even revive teammates!
  • Healing: A move to cure/get rid of status effects, with stronger versions healing more status effects.
  • Shield: A move that reflects half of the damage taken back to opponents.
  • Hypnosis: A move that puts opponents to sleep, with it either being one opponent or multiple.
  • Paralysis: A move that… paralyzes you, preventing you from doing any physical attacks. However, mental functions and thought-based attacks can still be used.
  • Teleport: Ness runs really, REALLY FAST, or alternatively, can spin in place really fast to teleport to a location he has previously been.

Dream Vision

When dreaming, Ness can see visions of others and what they’re currently doing, such as when he had a vision of Poo. (Not useful in combat, but important to mention)

Telepathy

Can read people’s minds, and can communicate with others by talking through their minds.

Telekinesis

When Ness was a baby, he was able to move bottles, although he hadn’t developed the ability much.

State of Nothingness/Auto Mode

Basically Ultra Instinct.

Astral Projection

Ness can separate his mind from his body, although it’s not suited for mid-combat.

PSI Burst

Essentially a burst of PSI energy. When under intense trauma or mental stress, Ness can release this. It damages opponents around him. Holding in this burst could damage him, but increase his thought speed 5 to 10 times over.

Melodies/Creation

When Ness made Magicant (an entire universe in his head), he was able to create items and weapons and bring them back to the real world, although he “lost it” when he absorbed Magicant in its entirety.

Soul Movement/"Time Travel"

After beating Giygas, Ness moved his soul (from a robot in the past) to his actual body in the present. (Can’t be used in battle, for obvious reasons)

Non-Physical Interaction

Can fight/interact with ghosts such as Zombie Possessors, as seen above. He later fights "Ghost of Starmen," which could potentially be actual ghosts. Although, it could be just wordplay. But for the most part, yeah, he can touch the untouchable.

Underwater Breathing

Assuming this isn’t a game mechanic, Ness can breathe underwater indefinitely.

SMASH

Whenever Ness gets a critical hit, it becomes a SMASH attack that does more damage. Along with this, he can increase his likelihood of getting SMASHes by increasing his Guts with several items.

Forms/States

Magicant
After Ness absorbed Magicant, he got a massive stat boost, with it being his new base.

Power of the Earth (specifically a manga thing)
Ness and his friends call out to the Earth, which ends up empowering them. Whether or not it is a temporary amp is questionable since it was gone after Ness defeated Giygas.

Yuu

Special Skills

Special Skills are abilities that Yuu can use at the expense of losing energy. They allow her to use different combinations of attacks. They even allow her to use fire magic! While she wasn’t able to before, the Spirit Sword with the Fountain Spirit allowed her to utilize it properly!
  • Flame Slash: This attack ignites her sword on fire, and she slams it into enemies for a more powerful attack. This fire is so powerful that it can even hurt the Wild Fiery Lizzerd, who is hotter than the sun.
  • Gale Slash: This is a fast attack that quickly slices through enemies. It is so fast that it even allows her to attack first.
  • Jump Slash: This is a vertical slash attack that can attack multiple enemies by slicing through them.
  • Great Flame Slash: This is a more powerful version of the Flame Slash, in which this does EVEN MORE damage, and can scorch multiple enemies at once.
  • Survey: This is an action that doesn’t require any energy. Yuu essentially looks closely at an enemy and learns their weaknesses. It even includes learning about their stats and description. She is pretty much mind-reading here. No, really. She is.
  • Guard: She blocks to halve all damage and gain energy.

Critical Hits

Critical Hits are a gameplay mechanic that has a chance of happening when attacking. But basically, these can ignore durability. Treasure Cats have the highest durability in the game, with a defense stat of 99999. By hitting them with a critical, you can bypass their durability and instantly kill them.

Fourth Wall Awareness

Yuu seemingly has Fourth Wall Awareness, as she knows she is within a storybook, and seemingly knows that other mediums outside of hers exist. Such as the time she traversed into the Liar Princess and the Blind Prince’s story, went to a joint exhibit selling real-life merch, watched a stream of her game, leaving the confines of the comic she is in, etc.

Time Manipulation

Within Classic Dungeon X3, Yuu can run between pages of the book she is in to accelerate and rewind time. This also shows more of her Fourth Wall breaking abilities.

Non-Physical Interaction

Yuu can fight and damage ghostly entities like Ghost Wyvernflies, who are literal ghosts. Along with this, Yuu can hurt enemies within the Nightmare World. These enemies are also said to be literal nightmares.

Resistances

Ness

Yuu

  • Extreme Heat/Burns: Yuu can resist being around and damaged by enemies who are hotter than the sun, and with the Omni-Amulet, she can resist burns.
  • Extreme Cold/Freezing/Radiation: Yuu can survive cold temperatures by carrying around the Hollow Bumpy Stone, and can fight enemies who can make snowstorms and blizzards. She can also resist the “chill” status effect with the Omni-Amulet and can resist “radiated freezing.”
  • Poison/Acid: Can survive attacks from poison enemies, in which some can kill and stop the growing of plants with their toxins, with the Omni-Amulet. She can also resist acid-based attacks that can melt things.
  • Sleep Manipulation: She is not affected by Dream Seapony’s singing, which can put targets to sleep with yet again, with the Omni-Amulet.
  • Soul Manipulation: Yuu can survive her fountain trial, in which most likely her soul is more vulnerable since she is no longer in her physical body within the Fountain World. Along with this, she can survive altercations with Death Gods, who can take souls.
  • Power Nullification: Griffons can use “seal” on Yuu, which power nullifies. But again, the great almighty Omni-Amulet (are you sure?) comes to save the day by giving her resistance to this.
  • Partial Mind Manipulation: Yuu can fight off mental corruption by Nightmare Water Fleas for a short time, but will eventually get her mind corrupted if given enough time.
  • Statistics Reduction: With the Omni-Amulet yet again, Yuu can resist “sticky,” which makes her defense lower and slower, and can resist Cotton Bugs’ cling ability, which lowers accuracy.
  • Possibly Dimensional BFR: Nightmare Heads are stated to take targets to another world with their roots. Yuu can survive altercations with them, though it is hard to say if they were trying to in their fight.

Feats

Ness

Overall

  • Was one of the chosen four meant to stop Giygas.
  • Quickly mastered PSI after learning of its existence.
  • Reached the Eight Sancutaries and collected their melodies.
  • Defeated Mr. Carpenter, Mr. Belch, Starman Delux, Mani Mani Statue, Porky, and Giygas.
  • Was one of the OG 12 in Smash Bros.

Power

Speed

Scaling

Ness' Party + Mother 1/3 Party

As Ness has fought alongside his party, he should be comparable to them, and due to defeating Giygas, he upscales the party from Mother 1, who couldn’t defeat him and had to make him retreat via singing a song from his childhood, and he’d naturally upscale the Mother 3 party due to narrative implications and the fact that the Mother 3 party haven’t faced a threat comparable to Giygas.

Giygas

The big bad of Earthbound. While you can argue that Ness shouldn’t scale to Giygas due to requiring prayers to beat him in the game, in the manga, Ness was able to beat him with the Power of the Earth, so scaling to him should be fine.

Yuu

Overall

  • Became the great hero that she always strived to be!
  • Helped solve many characters’ troubles and saved many lives.
  • Conquered the darkness within her heart, gaining the power of the Fountain.
  • Defeated Cybat, nightmare versions of her friends and herself, Arthur, and the Demon King.
  • She finally appeared in a new game, being in Classic Dungeon X3!

Power

Speed

Scaling

Yuu's Allies and Monsters

Yuu has had many allies on her quest to become a great hero. She should upscale them due to being massively stronger than all of them, and the fact that they have fought the same enemies together. And for monsters, she should naturally upscale due to defeating these guys.

The Dragon/Demon King

Yuu should be able to upscale the Dragon King and the Demon King, due to her defeating them. So scaling to them should be fine.

Other NIS Characters

(Note: I originally wanted this matchup to not include Disgaea, due to that causing Yuu’s main problem with matchups, being her overreliance on Disgaea cosmology. Also, since it was kinda iffy. Butttttttt, she was recently added to Classic Dungeon X3, so she just scales now.)

Now you may be thinking, how does Yuu scale to these other characters, and why are these characters here? Well, Yuu has officially crossed over with the Liar Princess, and is shown to be vastly superior to her in power (including the fact that she is scared of Yuu’s power), and the Liar Princess can scale to powerful characters such as Laharl and Alexander through Makai Wars, along with Ash and Marona through Phantom Brave. If that doesn’t convince you, Yuu has officially crossed over with all these characters in Classic Dungeon X3. We will only be including Liar Princess and Disgaea scaling for this section, though.

Weaknesses

Ness

While Ness is impressive, sure, he’s not without his weaknesses. One weakness he has is that he typically fights with a party, and thus has less experience in one-on-one fights compared to fights with his party members. A second weakness that he has is that his PP is limited, and once that runs out, he can no longer use any PSI attacks, and his hypnosis can be negated by smart enough opponents. However, the biggest weakness that Ness has is that despite all his power, he’s generally a pacifist, so unless you’re a robot, he’d typically beat you up until you flee. In other words, you don’t have to worry about Ness killing you in a fight against him anytime soon.

Yuu

While Yuu has achieved many accomplishments, she’s not without her downsides. Outside of battle, her main downside is the fact that Yuu isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed due to her upbringing, with her not knowing how to read and her being too trusting, with the latter being the reason why Cybat had the chance to kill her during the Hunne Tribe incident. In battle, Yuu’s main weakness is the fact that she’s a pacifist, and doesn’t go around killing people (which makes sense, as heroes don’t go around killing people), so her opponents don’t have to worry about her killing them anytime soon, and she’s typically used to fighting with her party, and has less experience fighting solo. There’s also the weakness of her having an infatuation with fluffy animals and immediately diving into them and falling asleep due to this, but Ness doesn’t have any fluffy animals at his disposal outside of a monkey, so it wouldn’t mean much lol.

Before the Verdict

Ness

What does Truth of the Universe do?

With Earthbound being confusing and having flowery knowledge, there have been some confusing things about what the Truth of the Universe (or TotU for short) does for Ness (besides the power boost that it grants, of course), with people saying that it gives Ness the ability to come back from death (like Undertale) and gives him fate manipulation. There’s also the whole “being one with the universe” thing for Ness. Now, it’s time to clear up ALL of those things. First, let’s start with Ness coming back from death.

Some people believe that if Ness dies, it would become a “bad dream”, where Ness would wake up with all the memories of what happened (basically Save and Load lol). However, there are two things that poke holes in that claim. The first one is the likelihood that, instead of dying, you just get knocked unconscious. An easy way to prove this is the Frank boss fight. If you beat Frank but lose to his tank, then come back to fight him again, he says this:
That, and the fact that he immediately starts the fight with his tank instead of fighting again before using the tank, implies that Ness got knocked unconscious, came back, and Frank, knowing that he’d lose to Ness again, just used the tank off-rip. The second thing that pokes holes in the whole “come back to life” thing is this: If Ness comes back to life with his party’s defeat being reverted due to the fight “not happening”, then why is Ness’ party in “spirit form” (but are actually just unconscious, which makes sense since they come back to normal after a trip to the hospital) instead of physically with him? It wouldn’t make sense for his party to be defeated in a fight that “hasn’t happened”, so it would be more likely that Ness was knocked unconscious in every game over, and therefore CAN DIE.

Now, to explain the “fate hax” that Ness gets from TotU. Some people believe that Ness can manipulate fate, which, if believed, would make Ness extremely hard to beat unless you have better fate manipulation or a counter to it. However, it’s unlikely for that to be the case. A big point against it is the fact that you can be knocked out and lose for each game over, and even if you believe that Ness gets his fate hax after Magicant, he could still lose even after that. The one thing that COULD argue for fate hax is the fact that Ness and his party were able to beat Giygas even though he has a 99% chance of victory. However, nothing implies that Ness had to manipulate fate to win, and it’s more likely an Avengers Infinity War/Endgame situation where there’s only one scenario where they win and the rest they lose.

Finally, it’s time to explain the whole “becoming one with the universe” thing Ness has, which the Ness vs. Frisk blog has explained, and what we’ll simplify here (don’t want to deal with plagiarism by copy and pasting what they said lol). Absorbing Magicant made Ness smarter, but to what extent is unknown, and the “one with the universe” statement should at best apply to Ness’ consciousness. What’s said mostly is the fact that Ness and the universe’s destinies are intertwined, which makes sense since Ness (and his party) are trying to save the universe from Giygas, so the universe’s fate depends on whether or not they win or lose. When it was mentioned that Ness’ psychic power expanded, it refers to Ness growing more powerful and not that his power has LITERALLY expanded across the universe. Finally, there’s an argument about Ness gaining Ultimate Intelligence after going into the Sea of Eden and thus should have every PSI move, which doesn’t make sense. If PSI were intelligence based, Jeff should have PSI of his own due to being the smartest member (and if Ness did gain Ultimate Intelligence, Jeff would’ve been useless now lol), and some skills like Poo’s PK Starstorm had to be LEARNED, with guidebooks directly showing and proving that Ness can’t learn other moves.

TLDR: Truth of the Universe is likely just a power boost that Ness got, which is fitting considering that this is the game’s version of Power of the Earth, which was a power boost that Ness and his friends got from the novel. This means that Ness being able to come back from death and him having fate hax is a no-go.

Dark Dragon

Some people talk about how the Dark Dragon could be Multi+, and how Ness could potentially scale to it due to both having the “Power of Earth”. Fortunately for the sake of explanation, this is also something mentioned in the blog linked above, which will be simplified (again, plagiarism lol). First note, it’s possible that Ness having and Dark Dragon being the “Power of Earth” could be purely coincidental, with Ness drawing power from 8 spots around the Earth and Dark Dragon LITERALLY referring to the fact that he’s sealed under the Earth (which would specifically refer to the dragon’s power itself). Even then, it wouldn’t mean much. First, with Porky being there and the fact that WE KNOW he has a time travel machine, the events of Mother 3 take place within the same timeline as Mother 1 and 2 (only thing we’re not sure of is WHEN), and due to what Porky does in Mother 3, he likely gave himself robotic parts to “be” a robot and safely time travel. Finally, with Mother 3 not existing within the manga nor novel, no multiversal shenanigans are likely occurring.

Time Stop Clock

When reading Ness’ speed feats, you’re probably wondering about a certain time-stopping clock. Dali’s clock can stop time, and Ness can dodge its attacks, so that must imply immeasurable speeds, right? It would imply that… if it weren’t for the fact that Dali’s clock SPECIFICALLY stops your attacks. With that and the fact that you can dodge its attacks despite having finite stats, it means that it’s more likely for Ness to be able to resist a time stop than to have immeasurable speed, assuming Dali’s clock stops Ness himself. So does that mean immeasurable speed Ness is a no-go? We would say yes, if it weren’t for another thing that could POTENTIALLY get Ness that fast, so let’s get into it.

4D Novel Giygas

In the novelization, Giygas can send shockwaves through the fourth dimension, which is an axis of time. Doing this could potentially make Giygas, and therefore Ness, 4D. To explain both arguments made by the Frisk vs. Ness blog linked above, we will mention what the potential feat is, arguments for that side, arguments against it, and what it would mean if you buy it (if you don’t buy it, then you can just not use it). (Arguments would be simplified, of course) However, we’re not saying that you HAVE to buy them or NOT to buy them, as you can come to your own conclusion after reading this section.

Potential Feat: Giygas in the past crashed into the Earth as a “shooting star”, with the shockwave bleeding out into the time axis/fourth dimension, with a wormhole connecting several parallel worlds together, and Jeff believing that only Giygas is capable of this, with it later being shown that Giygas has control over the time axis and can send anything through time/other worlds.

Arguments for it: Giygas should scale to this level of power, as even if you ignored the fact that Jeff said that only Giygas is capable of this, Giygas SURVIVED the impact that created the shockwave in the first place, so he should at least scale to it. With the shockwave physically affecting other 3D universes and timelines, it proves its effect on a 4D scale, with the fact that higher dimensions are able to travel through lower ones helping with the argument. While yes, we don’t know exactly how many timelines are being converged, Jeff saying that the time axis is being thrown into chaos and Ness saying that Giygas is controlling it means that he should be capable of this, and Jeff being the knowledgeable person in the story helps prove its validity.

TLDR: Giygas surviving the impact and being able to affect 3D universes and timelines shows its effects on a 4D scale.

Arguments against it: The shockwave has only been stated to affect the time axis and nothing else, with the 4th dimension not being superior to other dimensions and thus making this a one dimensional feat. While the wormholes could pass 3D objects through them, that doesn’t mean that the feat affects 3D space, with it likely being simple time travel/timeline manipulation and not having control over the space. While we know there are infinite timelines, we never knew the specifics on HOW MANY timelines were involved, as we only saw a few of them being converged. Finally, with Jeff only mentioning that the shockwave must have happened with Giygas once and Ness not knowing if Giygas caused it later, it’s clear that they had little knowledge on the subject itself, and thus, attributing the feat to Giygas is shaky.

TLDR: The lack of knowing how many timelines are being converged and the possibility of it only affecting the time axis and making wormholes could make this a one dimensional feat.

What it would mean: If you decide to buy the arguments, Ness would be 4D in terms of power (specifically in his Power of Earth amp, as Ness needed it to beat Giygas and how Giygas wasn’t taking him seriously and was brushing off his attacks despite feeling pain from them, only feeling threatened when the amp was taken into consideration). However, while this would grant Ness a massive boost in power, this POTENTIALLY doesn’t boost his speed, as Ness and his party defeated Giygas by overpowering him with the Power of the Earth, with their attack range being SO BIG, it hit Giygas despite his speed, no speed required. You could still use immeasurable Ness, but it’s questionable to say the least.

Yuu

Are Dream World feats quantifiable?

One of Yuu’s stronger feats comes from when she is within the Nightmare World. In there, she can battle Dream Tapirs, which are stated to eat dreams, starting from the end and cutting them off in the middle. But one question remains. How big are dreams to reach Solar System to Multi-Solar System levels of power? Surely dreams aren’t that large…right? Well, first off, within the Nightmare World, which are clearly shown to be replicas of Yuu’s actual memories within the Monster Realm, in which celestial bodies such as the sun are present. Along with this, there are other things like clouds, rocks, grass, a moon, and STARS are present. Even in the official guidebook, it shows that Yuu’s dream contained stars and a moon within it. Backing this up. And again, Yuu is able to keep up and trade blows with these creatures. There is also no reason that these guys hold back within their fight, as they are all hostile.

But we aren’t done yet. Some statements could raise Yuu’s power beyond just Solar System. It's mainly due to a quest line within the game, where a character named Corvo was put in a dream where he was on a road. While he did try and make distance by walking down it, the road just kept going and going. This shows that dreams also could potentially be infinite in size, raising Yuu’s power from High Universal to Universal+. And could raise her speed to Infinite, since Dream Tapirs essentially eat half of dreams. Eating half of infinity means they should have infinite speed.

Does Yuu scale to Disgaea characters?

Alrighty, now this is the big one. Could Yuu scale to Disgaea characters, and how can Yuu scale to Disgaea characters? Well, let's get into that. For starters, Disgaea as a franchise, along with other NIS games, is sorta like a “everyone scales to each other” franchise, kinda like Looney Tunes in a way. But also, their worlds are connected in a way, as they cross over SO MUCH. Now, it is worth mentioning that crossovers outside of NIS-owned characters are seemingly not canon. Stuff like Attack on Titan, Seven Deadly Sins, Madoka Magica, etc. But mainly all NIS-owned franchises crossover, and seem to be canon. Now, what does this mean for Yuu?

Well, Yuu has shown to be able to traverse to different worlds, or universes outside her own. Such as when she met the Princess and Prince from the Liar Princess and the Blind Prince. Multiple times. She also seemingly knows about other franchises such as Disgaea. But to take it a step further, in a game called Makai Wars, a character named Asagi is tasked by the goddess Freya to gather many characters across the multiverse to save a parallel multiverse. And the Princess and Prince were two of those characters. They can fight with and against Laharl, and other characters like Mao or Alexander. Then recently, she was added to Phantom Brave, where she again, scales to other characters, such as Marona, who actually canonically beat Laharl. 3 times. And recently, again, the Princess was added to Classic Dungeon X3, where she can fight the same enemies Laharl and other characters fight. And funnily enough, Yuu was added to the game as well. So she just straight up scales to Laharl and other characters.

Add on to the fact that Yuu and the Princess fight against the same enemies (those said enemies literally leave the comic panel they are in, suggesting they can traverse storybooks). And when they both met each other, the Princess actually feared Yuu’s combat capabilities. Just adding all this together, the Princess can scale to the Disgaea cast through Makai Wars, Phantom Brave, and Classic Dungeon X3, while also dealing with Disgaea-level enemies in Makai Wars. Yuu will also naturally upscale her, and with her inclusion within Classic Dungeon X3, there seems to be no problem with scaling her to these characters. So yeah, with that, Yuu can reach Multiversal+ levels of power and Infinite-Immeasurable levels of speed. Also, a side note: Laharl could reach 5D levels of power through upscaling Baal. But it is kinda iffy.

To make a long story short, yes, Yuu can scale to Disgaea characters.

Verdict

Stats

For power, this is pretty simple, as both should at bare minimum be Uni+, with Ness absorbing Magicant, a universe with an immeasurable area, and Yuu taking the power of the Fountain World, which has endless dreams. So at low ends, they’re equal in power. However, when we get into higher power tiers, we get a clear picture. Ness could, at best, reach 4D with the time axis feat Giygas did, while Yuu with Disgaea could reach 4D-5D, making Yuu infinitely stronger than Ness when scaling them to the highest, but equal if we have them be at 4D.

For speed, this actually could get close. For calculable speed, Ness takes this pretty handily due to summoning the power of the Earth to kill Giygas, while Yuu’s fastest calculable speed feat is Rocky’s vague FTL+ speed feat, but even then, it's not even close. But in terms of incalculable speed feats, Yuu pretty handily takes this, due to Dream Tapirs eating half of infinite dreams in a short time…which is still infinite. While Ness could have immeasurable speed arguments, you can give equal leeway to Yuu, in which she could also potentially reach immeasurable speeds. Which they tie in.

To summarize, both are equal in power in their low ends and mid ends, with Yuu taking power at the high ends. In terms of speed, while Ness is faster with calculable feats, Yuu is infinitely faster than Ness due to scaling to Dream Eating Tapier and Disgaea (unless you buy immeasurable Ness, in which case they’d be equal in speed).

Arsenal and Abilities

In terms of abilities, it’s pretty clear that Ness has the edge in terms of variety. While Yuu can light her sword on fire, read minds, and manipulate time, Ness can also read minds, make force fields, put you to sleep, paralyze you, use telekinesis, heal wounds, clear status effects, etc, etc, etc. In terms of quality, both have an option that the other can’t resist. For Yuu, it’s her time manipulation ability, and for Ness, it’s the insta kill from PK Flash. However, with the insta kill being random, it’s a bit more unreliable than Yuu using her time manipulation.

In terms of an arsenal, Ness overall has a bigger arsenal than Yuu, but in terms of quality, it’s pretty much dead even. Both have items to attack the other with, both can apply status effects and resist them, both can heal with items, and both have a variety of weapons with certain effects that can be used on the opponent. Ness would have the numbers advantage due to being able to summon animals to attack. Yuu, with having Stardust and the Large Sickle, would help her clear the crowd. Both also have items that the other doesn’t have, similarly, with Ness being able to turn into a dragon with the Bag of Dragonite and Yuu being able to seal abilities with Cursed Web.

To summarize, Ness has more abilities, with Yuu having a more reliable hax ability that Ness can’t resist, which would make abilities and arsenal a tie. In terms of an arsenal, both have a ton of things that can be used against the other, which the other either can counter or doesn’t have an answer to, so it’s easier to have it be a tie.

Tertiary Factors

In terms of intelligence, this is a pretty easy Ness sweep. Bare minimum, Ness is an average boy and likely had an education, while Yuu didn’t know how to read due to her unique circumstances. While yes, she is learning how to read, the point is that she’s a bit behind when it comes to general knowledge, so Ness takes this category.

In terms of experience, it’s pretty clear that Yuu has gone through way more adventures than Ness has, and would have more experience in terms of quantity. However, in terms of quality, Ness takes it due to his one adventure having more stakes than any of Yuu’s adventures. The safest bet here is to have experience be a tie.

Finally, there’s skill, which would be simple if it weren’t for one thing, which we will mention in a moment. Generally, Yuu is definitely way more skilled, due to actually training how to fight for a LONG time. In comparison, Ness had no combat experience or anything like that before being thrust into his adventure, but Ness essentially got UI with his body being able to react without his mind needing to process it, which takes some serious skill. The best bet would be to have this category be a tie.

While Ness has a ton of powers and options to use, and both have arsenals full of items to attack with, status effects to potentially use, and ways to resist some of said status effects, Yuu basically has a counter to everything he could throw at her. Any animals that Ness can throw at Yuu, she can just clear away with Great Fire Slash, Large Sickle, or Stardust. In terms of status effects that could be used on Yuu, Yuu’s revive charms would protect her from the insta kill of PK Flash, the lowering accuracy and hypnosis would be negated by the WHERE IS OMNI MAN?!?! Amulet, and with Ness’ ability to make Yuu hit herself with PK Flash, Yuu having a gauntlet that heals whoever it hits, means that Yuu would be getting free heals whenever affected by that status effect. While yes, Yuu’s revive charms would soon run out and thus she’d be vulnerable to the insta kill, and she doesn’t have an option around paralysis, there is one thing that is the bane of Ness existence: CURSED WEB. Ness hasn’t shown any resistance to power nullification, and with Yuu typically reading the minds of her opponents, she’d go for it sooner rather than later. Once that happens, Ness would be forced to rely on his arsenal, which, while great, doesn’t have the option to easily kill Yuu in comparison to PK Flash. There could be a potential argument of Ness being able to absorb the Fountain World and get a power boost from it, similar to what he did with Magicant, but it’s more likely for Yuu to seal him before the fight gets to that point. Also, Ness doesn’t have an answer to time manipulation (as Yuu doesn’t do time stops, which is the one thing that Ness could potentially resist) or BFR, with Yuu either BFRing Ness in a Dark Fountain Trial or in a story book to end the fight. Finally, if the fight were to boil down to a war of attrition, Yuu’s passive healing health and energy would mean that while both CAN run out, Ness would run out of healing items LONG BEFORE Yuu does.

In terms of stats, while both are basically equal in terms of speed in their high ends, Yuu would be way too powerful for Ness to damage if you buy 5D Disgaea, which would make Yuu INFINITELY stronger. But let’s say, for the sake of argument, that we either don’t use Disgaea scaling for Yuu or we have Yuu be 4D. Well, unless you also buy immeasurable Ness, Yuu would be INFINITELY faster than him, so she could just seal his abilities, and blitz and dura neg crit Ness to oblivion while he can’t do anything about it. While Ness’ AOE is crazy, if Yuu hasn’t already sealed him, she could just equip the Glass Statue and be safe from Ness for long enough to seal his abilities before going for the blitz and dura neg combo mentioned earlier. The only way for Ness to win requires you to not use Disgaea for Yuu AND to buy immeasurable Ness (4D Ness wouldn’t be needed with the blitz gap), which is essentially giving Ness the benefit of the doubt while not doing the same for Yuu, and even then, the immortality from the Fountain World could be a potential counter to it as Ness wouldn’t be able to put Yuu down, then they’d fight until Ness runs out of stamina, which would let Yuu eventually crit him until victory. (Even if you don’t think that Yuu’s immortality would save her from that stat gap, that would be 1 scenario in which Ness can win compared to Yuu’s 5 scenarios in which she can win.) Also, in case someone’s wondering about whether or not we believe the Power of the Earth is a temporary amp or not, it wouldn’t change the verdict if it were temporary or permanent, so that isn’t an issue.

Ness was impressive, and his longer list of abilities and arsenal would definitely give Yuu a challenge, but Yuu had the strength, abilities, and counters to ultimately come out on top. Ness thought he was bound for victory in this great battle, but Yuu hit him out of the park!

The Winner is Yuu
